Trump Lands in Switzerland to Attend WEF
Trump’s trip was delayed after his primary aircraft, Air Force One, turned back to Washington’s Joint Base Andrews late Tuesday due to technical trouble, before resuming the journey on a substitute jet after midnight.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the flight’s crew found a “minor electrical issue” shortly after takeoff, which led to the precautionary return.
Trump is expected to speak before global business leaders and senior policymakers at 2:30 p.m. local time (1330 GMT), and officials maintained the timing of his address despite the travel hiccup.
In discussions and reporting around the forum, Trump has been framed by some commentators as buoyed by recent U.S. military action that ousted Venezuela’s long-time leader Nicolás Maduro, with one senior White House official quoted by media saying the president felt “emboldened” by the operation.
The same official also noted Trump is heartened by the early stages of a proposed “Board of Peace,” intended to facilitate international dispute settlement.
Trump’s attendance comes as his bid to acquire Greenland has sparked resistance from European nations, making the WEF gathering not just an economic forum but a focal point of transatlantic tensions.
